GLUTEN and DAIRY FREE?!?

Some simple ideas on how to replace the most common gluten and dairy containing products?

SNACK IDEAS

TAMARI ALMONDS AND SUNFLOWER KERNELS

ingredients: ALMONDS
SUNFLOWER KERNELS
TAMARI

directions:
Gather the amount of nuts and seeds you would like to prepare. Place in an appropriate sized container, and drizzle Tamari (wheat free soy sauce) over them. Shake until coated. Line a baking tray with foil, or grease the tray with a light spray of extra virgin olive oil. Spread the nuts evenly in the tray and bake in a moderate oven for approximately 10-15 minutes, turning once to ensure an even cook. You can vary the flavour by sprinkling some chilli powder or ginger powder over the nuts before baking.
Allow to cool, then enjoy!

These make a delicious alternative, healthy snack when you crave something savoury, a little salty but don’t want something naughty!

SPOTLIGHT ON

LIVING NATURE -by siobhan jordan

Living Nature is one of the few skincare companies in the world that can truly use the word “natural”. Founded by Suzanne Hall - a woman with an affinity for the healing qualities of plants and an awareness of the uniqueness of the New Zealand environment, she has created a skincare range that combines both science and spirituality.

The Living Nature products are made without artificial preservatives or other synthetic products, instead utilising ingredients such as vitamin E and manuka honey. Other key features of the range include no animal testing, no animal or genetically modified ingredients and recycled packaging. However, the real strength of the range is the utilisation of New Zealand medicinal plants such as the manuka tree, from which honey and oil is derived. The therapeutic benefits of manuka include anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and skin healing properties.

The range includes face, body and hair care products as well as some specialty products, unique to Living Nature, such as the Candida Gel (which is anti-fungal, calming and soothing) and the Beautiful Belly Oil (which nourishes the skin and promotes elasticity during and after pregnancy). Living Nature is a versatile skincare line that is suitable for all skin types - dry, oily, normal, combination and mature skin and is of particular benefit to troubled skin such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Perhaps the best way to understand the Living Nature philosophy is to share their mission statement:

“To create a sustainable, profitable, ecological, educational,
and inspirational business that impacts on the individual by promoting healthy vibrant skin; on the community by creating employment; on the country by featuring the uniqueness of our plant resources and earning export income; on the world by being a model of ethical, honourable business and solving inherent 21st century problems in a way that inspires the human spirit.”

We at the Modern Apothecary invite you to come in and try this beautiful range.

BRAUER by corynne hughes

Parents have been highly impressed by the Brauer range of products. Brauer’s range is based on the principles of homeopathy, which works by stimulating the body to heal itself. Homeopathic medicines are produced using tiny amounts of the crude substance, diluted and potentised, minimising the chances of adverse reactions.

THE COLD/FLU RELIEF FORMULA
As its name suggests is great to use for kids when they are congested, feverish and in pain- common symptoms of colds and flu. Inflammation of the throat and upper airways is addressed by homeopathic Apis and Bryonia. Aurum, Baptisia, Arsenicum and Belladonna are some of the ingredients addressing runny noses, sore throat, exhaustion, congestive headaches and chills. Ingredients helping to promote a stronger immune system and fortify against further infection include Iron phosphate, Vitamin C, echinacea and zinc.
All in all, Brauer’s cold/ Flu relief provides a safe, effective and body-friendly alternative for those winter ailments.

THE RECOVERY FORMULA
This is an excellent choice for after your child has had a cold/ flu and is taking that little bit too long to be restored back to optimum health. After a cold/flu, the body has an increased need for vitamin C, it has had a disrupted digestive system so tends not to utilise nutrients as well as it could and there tends to be an increased accumulation of waste products which need encouragement to leave the body.
Recovery contains vitamin C, Angelica and Calc phos which help improve poor nutrition and digestion, Ferrum phos to assist iron levels and Urtica which helps eliminate waste products and is a general detoxifier.
Other ingredients aim to restore energy levels and reduce mental fatigue often associated with less than optimal health.

HERB OF THE MONTH
- by corynne hughes

SLIPPERY ELM POWDER
I can attest to the benefits of this wonderful herb, and its diverse uses, and portability! I took a kilo of the powder with me when I went travelling, to have on hand for digestive upsets, soothing coughs, and, being high in fibre, keeping the bowels moving regularly. Often when you travel, your body systems are altered, and many travellers complain of constipation. Travelling through Africa, where the chances of digestive upset and diarrhoea are increased,
Slippery Elm came in handy, as I gave much of it to my fellow travel companions to soothe their ailments!
You don't need to take as much as I did with you, however, a 100g bag proves very useful to have on hand.

BOTANICAL NAME: ULMUS FULVA
COMMON NAME: SLIPPERY ELM
PART USED: The powdered bark, which has a light, fluffy feel to it.
WHY DOES IT WORK?: Slippery elm is high in fibre, nutritious and contains mucilages, which act to coat the mucus membranes of your digestive and upper respiratory tracts.
USES: Gastritis
Gastric or duodenal ulcer
Colitis
Diarrhoea
Cough, irritated throat
HOW TO USE: You can add a teaspoon of slippery elm powder to a smoothie and blend, or eat as a porridge on its own. You can simply mix 1 teaspoon in a glass of water and mix thoroughly, drinking immediately.

TRAVEL TIP -by corynne hughes

Staying healthy in tough places! If you are travelling to Africa, South America or any place prone to parasitic infection, chat with one of the Naturopaths here at The Modern Apothecary. There are some excellent, effective products we can recommend that will help to prevent some of the nasty ailments that may hinder you as the traveller.
When I was travelling through Africa, I could not have done without my immune boosting, anti-parasitic, anti-microbial herbal mix to stop the bugs in their dusty African tracks before they could ruin my holiday! This formula was one I made up, containing a variety of herbs that both boosted my body’s own defence system against infection, and herbs to kill any bugs that take hold too fast for my body to handle. For the parasitic control, no substitute for drinking unsafe water, but helpful to combat the unavoidable is a great product by Bioceuticals. “Paracea”, which contains the powerful Citrus Seed extract, a strong anti-microbial substance, and Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood), an anti-parasitic herb is one product I could not have done without.
So if you are considering a well earned trip overseas, or even something as simple as a camping trip here in your own backyard, come in and have a chat for more ideas on how to stay healthy and happy in your travels!

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE THERAPY
Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT), best known for detoxification, is an effective and versatile treatment for a wide range of conditions, including: acne, arthritis, bloating, lack of energy, fluid retention, constipation, hormonal imbalances, sluggish metabolism, insomnia, migraine, sinusitis, and stress, to name a few. As a preventative therapy LDT is particularly effective having a profound impact on strengthening the immune and nervous systems.

LDT also promotes natural anti-ageing effects due to oxygenation, rehydration and regeneration of tissue and skin, so the skin becomes more radiant, wrinkles can fill out, double chins can disappear, bags under the eyes reduce with the eyes becoming clear and bright, and facial features become more defined.

This marvellous therapy involves light, rhythmic movements on the skin’s surface, sending you into a state of blissful calm. As it is neither painful nor invasive,
LDT is suitable for people from the very young to the very old, including pregnant women. The benefits can be physical, mental and emotional.

A healthy body, radiant skin, strong immune system, vitality, and mental clarity can be the result of regular
LDT treatments.
